Will my homeowners insurance premium increase if I file a claim?

Answer:
Technically… a homeowners insurance company

cannot legally increase the cost of your base insurance policy simply because you have filed a claim.  After all… this is the promise of insurance… that when you need help, the coverage is there.  Why would you pay more for a product just because you use it?  Well… there is at least one way your premium will increase if you have occasion to file a claim…

Homeowners insurance policies usually offer discounts for various risk mitigating factors.  Maybe you have a deadbolt installed or an alarm system… a sprinkler system… These characteristics should make your home less of a risk to insure since they’ll reduce the chance that the insurer will be paying a big claim someday.  There’s another way to see a discount though… If you’re “claim free” you show the insurer that you’re a good risk and that you’re not apt to file claims.  So… most insurers offer a claim free discount when they take on a new homeowners customer.

If you file a claim—you’ll probably lose your claim free discount.  Lose the discount and technically your premiums will go up when compared to what you had been paying.  So while it’s not technically a rate increase in the purest sense—you are paying more thanks to the loss of the discount.
