What is a Family Health Plan?

Answer:
Not everyone has access to group health insurance policies

through their work. When group insurance is not an option and health coverage is desired, you can get an individual policy. However, individual policies are pricey. When you have a family to insure, purchasing several individual health insurance policies can be cost-prohibitive. A family health plan offers a compromise. Family health plans treat the entire family as a single, albeit small, group rather than multiple individuals.

While group coverage through an employer is generally the most desirable and affordable option it’s not an option for all workers. If you don’t have access to group medical coverage, a family health plan is the next best thing. Not only will you and your family receive the medical coverage you desire, you’ll pay less than if you had purchased a separate individual plan for each family member.

Just like their group medical plan counterparts, family health plans come in a variety of offerings from HMO and traditional deductible plans to high deductible/Health Savings Account plans. You can even get dental benefits as part of some of these family health plans.
