What do I do if I can't find my Life Insurance Policy?

Answer:
If you can’t find your insurance policy,

you can be sure that when the time comes for your beneficiaries to collect, they won’t be able to find it either. Your beneficiaries will rely on your written instructions and will in order to even realize that a life insurance policy exists. They won’t be able to file a claim and notify your life insurance company of your passing if they do not know you have a policy and who the policy was purchased from.

Fortunately, you are still alive and able to fix this situation. Do you remember who issued the policy? Did you buy it from an agent? If so, contact your insurance agent or the company directly for assistance. Once you’ve established who you are, you should be able to get a copy of the policy. Place it in a safe location along with your other estate planning documents and let your family members know where it is.

If you don’t remember who issued the policy, you’ll have a little work to do. Did you get the policy through your employer? Contact the human resources department and ask for help in contacting the insurance carrier.

You can also wait for your next bill to arrive as you should be paying premiums in order to maintain your coverage. The bill will have contact information and your policy number. However, this could be a long wait if you pay your premiums annually.  Instead look through your bank records and see who you’ve been paying your bills to.
