We’re Moving to Florida, What are my Options for Home Insurance?

Answer:
The “Sunshine State” offers a great place

to live; however, it’s difficult to find inexpensive home insurance. Here are a few tips to consider when searching for home insurance in Florida:

Tip #1
Research all private insurance companies to see if they are writing homeowner policies in Florida. (You may not find many.) Compare the cost and the coverage for each company.

Tip #2
If you’re unable to find homeowners insurance in the private market, you may have to consider Citizens - the state-sponsored plan. Be aware that state law requires Citizens to charge more than any private insurers.

Tip #3
If you’re buying a home, the higher the price, the more likely it is that a private insurer will not offer coverage. And, remember – location, location, location. If your home is in a high risk area your only option to obtain hurricane coverage may be through Citizens. Consider purchasing newer versus older real estate. (Statewide building codes were enacted in 2001.)
