I've been in an accident, what are the next steps?

Answer:
First, try to get your car off the road and in a safe place

if possible. If not, turn on the hazard lights and turn off the engine. Get out of the car as carefully as possible. Look and see if anyone is injured, if so do not move them and call 911 immediately.

If the accident is minor, call the police and report it. In the meantime, if another party is involved, exchange information without discussing fault. You will need to get the following information from the other party:
·    Year, make, and model of the car
·    License plate number of the car
·    Driver’s name
·    Driver’s address and phone number
·    Driver’s driver’s license number
·    Insurance company and policy number
·    Who owns the car? Write down the car owner’s name and address if different from the driver
·    Names, addresses, and phone numbers of all passengers and witnesses

Do not accept money or agree to ignore an ac
cident no matter how minor. This could come back to haunt you.

Take pictures if possible. Write down as much information as you can including the time and date, weather conditions, driving speed, and weather hazards. Draw a picture or diagram.

Once the police have arrived, get the name of the police officer and the police report number.

Call your insurance company and file the claim .
