I have a Learners Permit, do I need Car Insurance?

Most states don’t require a person with a learner’s permit to carry their own insurance
however the car the learner is learning on must be insured. This means that if you have your learner’s permit and you’ll be learning on your parents’ car, your parents’ insurance will cover you during this time.

Depending on which state you live in and your insurance company’s policies, your parents may have to formally notify the insurance company that you have your learner’s permit and will be driving the car. Most insurance companies do not charge extra during the learning process but will begin charging you when you become a licensed driver.

As a new driver, your rates will be higher than those of more experienced drivers. You may be able to qualify for lower rates by maintaining good grades and taking an approved driver’s education course.

If you attend a driving school and are learning on a car that the driving school is providing, their insurance should cover you.

If you plan on buying your own car, you will need to buy car insurance for it, even if you only have your learner’s permit .
