How much is Health Insurance for a family?

Answer:
Are you sitting down? Health insurance costs

are soaring
. According to the National Coalition on Health Care, in 2006, the average cost of health insurance for a family of four was $11,500 through group coverage.

Of that premium, workers contributed an average of about
$3000.  As costs soar, employers are requiring their employees to shoulder more of the bill. Workers in 2006 paid 10% more of the premium than they did in 2005 and $1094 more than they did just five years earlier.

The $11,500 annual premium for health care is higher than a full-time minimum wage earner’s gross income ($10,712)..

While COBRA extends health care coverage should you lose your job and want to continue your family’s health insurance coverage, many people find that they simply can’t afford the premiums.

Not only must they pay their own portion as always but they pay a portion of the premium that the employer previously paid as well as a 2% administrative fee.

Coming up with an extra $8500 or so during a time of a job transition isn’t easy.
