How long do I have after purchasing a vehicle to insure it? |
|
Answer:
Each state has their own laws relating to titling, In most states you have 30 days from when you purchase the vehicle to title and tag it. You may get a 30-day tag or you may be allowed to put the license plate from your previous vehicle on the new vehicle. Once that 30 day period is up, you will need to visit the DMV to get a new license plate and title the vehicle in the state. Now when you visit your local DMV office you'll need to have several things in order to receive your new license plate. One of the requirements your State asks for is proof of insurance. You will need to show them a copy of your insurance card. If you don't have car insurance on the new vehicle you will not receive your license plate therefore the vehicle will be illegally operating after the 30 day period. This is a lengthy explanation but the fact is that most states require proof of insurance and you must present it to receive your plate which needs to be done within 30 days after purchasing the vehicle. It's a good idea to have the vehicle insured the minute you bring it home. Call your car insurance agent and have them put the new vehicle on your policy. You won't have to pay anything until they send the new or pro-rated bill. Trackback(0)
