Answer:
An SR-22 form is a requirement imposed on drivers who have DUI/DWI convictions or have not shown fiscal responsibility in past auto accidents. In some states judges can order an SR-22 for other reasons. If you are required to file an SR-22 form, the first thing you must do is find an insurance company willing to sell you insurance which may be difficult or expensive if you are high risk driver.
The SR-22 isn’t the insurance, rather it’s proof that you have liability insurance. Not all states require SR-22s nor are all insurance companies licensed to issue SR-22s. Not only does an SR-22 let the state’s department of motor vehicles know you have liability insurance, it also stipulates that the insurer notify the department should your coverage lapse or get cancelled.
Once you’ve found an insurance company, you must buy the required liability insurance and pay for the SR-22 form. In some cases, the insurer will electronically file or mail the SR-22 to the department of motor vehicles. In other cases, you will need to deliver it to the department. Be prepared to pay SR-22 fees on top of your insurance premiums.
