Does my Auto Insurance cover a work vehicle?

Answer:
The owner of the work vehicle is the one who is supposed to insure it.

If you get in an accident while driving the work car, the primary insurance company is the owner’s insurance company. If the accident exceeds the limits on the primary policy, your insurance will be considered secondary as far as liability is concerned. Your insurance will not pay for damages to the work car however because it covers just your liability.

If you own a business and have work vehicles as part of the business, you are responsible for insuring those vehicles. All states have insurance laws with minimum liability insurance requirements or financial responsibility.

If you drive a work vehicle, be aware that the company you work for or their insurance company may have exclusions about coverage for personal use. If personal use of the vehicle is excluded from the policy or prohibited by company policy, you could find yourself in trouble should you get caught using the work vehicle outside of business and getting into an accident. If this happens, you could be liable for damages.
