Can you get car insurance while visiting the USA on a visa?

Once you have the drivers license, you have a few options.  Perhaps the cheapest might be to either rent a car and use the renter’s insurance or to add a rider onto a relative’s car insurance policy, which would cover you for the duration of your stay.

If you don’t have family in the United States or you need a car for a longer period of time, you can also check with any credit cards you hold – some of those will offer temporary car insurance.  Be sure you are familiar with the driving/parking laws in the states you’ll be visiting, as well.  Your final option for car insurance is to check with an auto insurance carrier such as Geico, Allstate, or Progressive – to name a few who will take on temporary, foreign customers with a current international drivers license and a visa.  As always, shop around and check out more than one company to find the best price.
