Are my Children Covered on my Auto Insurance Policy?

Answer:
Your children are covered under your insurance policy as passengers.
That is, if you get into an accident and they are injured, the “medical payments” portion of your policy will kick in if you have this type of coverage.

However if your children are drivers, they likely are not covered and will need to be added to your policy or obtain their own auto insurance policy. It’s usually cheaper to add them to your own policy rather than purchase insurance on their own. If they do get their own policy, as minors, you will need to sign their applications.

Some insurance companies will extend coverage to your children during the learning permit phase of their education but others require that you name them on the policy. Check with your insurance company to make sure.

Young drivers are involved in more accidents than those who have more experience. As such, they represent a larger risk to the insurance company. Because of the greater risk, their rates are higher than the rates of more experienced drivers. However, your young driver can qualify for lower rates if they are good students or have completed a qualified driver’s education course.
