Are my Car Contents such as a Stereo Covered by my Auto Insurance?

Answer:
Not necessarily. If you carry full coverage on your

vehicle, you may think that your contents are covered such as when someone breaks into your car and steals your belongings. When this happens, the comprehensive portion of your auto policy provides the insurance to repair damage to your vehicle, not necessarily replace your personal possessions.

Auto policies are designed to cover the car and its equipment (along with your liability) but not the contents. If the stereo is part of the car and ripped out of the dashboard that will probably be covered as it is considered equipment. However, if you are transporting a home stereo system to your house and it’s stolen, it won’t be covered nor will a portable stereo system or any other personal possessions be covered.

You may be able to file a claim under your homeowners or renters insurance policy because these policies provide coverage for your personal possessions away from home too. Check to see what your deductible is before filing a claim. For example, if you have a $1000 deductible and the only thing stolen was your $300 MP3 player, it won’t be worthwhile to file the claim.
