Are Household Items such as a Laptop Computer covered in my Car Insurance?

Answer:
No. Your car insurance is designed to protect your
personal liability, the car, and the car’s equipment not household items. If someone breaks into your car and steals your laptop, the damage to the car itself will be covered under the comprehensive portion of your policy.

If you have comprehensive insurance, the insurance company will pay for the resulting damage such as replacing the broken glass or damaged door locks. They will not pay for the stolen laptop.

You’re not necessarily out of luck though. If you have homeowners, renters, or business insurance (if the laptop is part of your business) you can file a claim under the policy instead. Homeowners and renters insurance provide protection for your belongings outside of the home. You may be subject to policy limits and deductible amounts though.

For example, if your policy limits computer equipment to $1000 and your laptop is worth $2000, you’ll only be reimbursed $1000. In addition, if you have a $500 deductible, you will only get $500. On the other hand, if you have purchased a “floater” on the laptop, you might be fully covered and have no deductible at all.
